Honey Myrtle Bangle
You know what it’s like, sometimes you get caught up thinking that the grass might be greener elsewhere. One of the things that keeps me rooted in place in those moments when that happens to me is my attachment to a beautiful honey myrtle tree just outside my bedroom window. It’s the first thing I see when I wake every morning and the last thing I see when I close the blinds at night.
It’s an extraordinary tree. In winter, its branches are bare, revealing their stunning sculptural forms, not unlike twisted willow. In spring, it explodes with gorgeous lime green leaf shoots, and in summer it’s covered with vibrantly green leaves that provide very welcome shade on hot summer days. When I think of moving house, I invariably circle back to…’but I wouldn’t want to leave that tree’. That’s not the whole story, of course, but it’s part of it.
I’ve spent many hours over the past few weeks working to capture the stunning detail in the honey myrtle’s branches, just as the spring shoots (that will grow into leaves) begin to emerge, and I’m very pleased with the result. I made a master sculpture of a long twig that has been cast in sterling silver. I’m working on a necklace design with this at the moment. In the meantime, I wanted to share my honey myrtle cuff bangle, which is made of sterling silver with 24 carat gold accents. It’s photographed here with a seed pod ring that complements it nicely.
